In 2026, Ballet de Barcelona added two works by George Balanchine to its repertory: Allegro Brillante and Tchaikovsky Pas de Deux.
Both works represent Balanchine's distinctive approach to classical ballet, placing musicality, speed and technical precision at the centre of the choreography.
The ballets were staged for Ballet de Barcelona by Joaquín De Luz, former Principal Dancer with New York City Ballet and former Artistic Director of the Compañía Nacional de Danza.
Together, the works offered two different examples of Balanchine's relationship with the music of Tchaikovsky: one built around the energy of an ensemble and principal couple, the other concentrated entirely on two dancers.
Balanchine described Allegro Brillante as containing “everything I know about the classical ballet in 13 minutes.”
Set to the first movement of Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 3, the ballet is led by a principal couple surrounded by an ensemble.
There is no narrative. The structure comes directly from the music, moving rapidly between solos, partnering and ensemble choreography.
Short, demanding and highly musical, Allegro Brillante condenses the scale and technique of classical ballet into just thirteen minutes.
