Chase Johnsey

Artistic Director & CEO — Ballet de Barcelona

Chase Johnsey is an internationally recognized dancer, advocate, and leader whose career has redefined the boundaries of classical ballet. Known for his groundbreaking artistry and visionary direction, Chase has dedicated his life to expanding access to dance and fostering greater authenticity and diversity within the art form.

As a performer, Chase made history as the first non-binary dancer to perform female roles with the English National Ballet, challenging long-standing traditions and sparking global dialogue about representation in ballet. He began his career with Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo, where for over a decade he toured across five continents, earning acclaim for his technical mastery, comedic brilliance, and unique ability to merge classical precision with expressive storytelling. His performances garnered international attention, earning him the UK National Dance Award for Best Male Dancer and features in ELLE Magazine, The Guardian, Dance Magazine, and other leading outlets. He has also appeared as a special guest on Amici, Italy’s most prominent dance competition television program.

In 2019, Chase co-founded Ballet de Barcelona, where he serves as Artistic Director and CEO. Under his leadership, the company has rapidly grown into one of Spain’s most vibrant and innovative dance institutions. Its repertoire blends beloved classics such as Giselle and The Nutcracker (Trencanous) with original creations including Chronos, Tongues, #YOUCHARGEME, and Perspectives. Ballet de Barcelona has been featured at prestigious events such as the Festival Castell de Peralada, where Perspectives premiered to critical acclaim, and tours regularly throughout Spain, Europe, and internationally.

Chase’s work extends beyond the stage. Through his collaboration with MindLeaps Rwanda, he uses dance to empower underprivileged, post-genocidal youth by fostering resilience, discipline, and hope through movement education.

As an outspoken LGBTQIA+ advocate, Chase leverages his platform to challenge stereotypes and increase visibility for artists who do not fit traditional molds. His leadership reflects a deep commitment to ensuring that ballet continues to evolve into a space that celebrates both tradition and transformation.

Chase continues to guide Ballet de Barcelona as a global ambassador for innovation, inclusivity, and artistic excellence, creating performances and programs that resonate with today’s audiences while honoring the rich classical heritage that shaped his journey.
