Ballet de Barcelona presents a bold reimagining of Tchaikovsky’s beloved Christmas classic—a story of courage, imagination and the freedom to be authentically yourself.

Inspired by Chase Johnsey’s own childhood memories of never completely fitting in, this production transforms The Nutcracker into a celebration of difference. Clara is no longer a passive character waiting to be rescued. She becomes the heroine of her own adventure, finding the courage to confront the Mouse King, free the Nutcracker Prince and lead the story into a world transformed by possibility.

Set to Tchaikovsky’s iconic score, the production preserves the magic, classical dancing and festive spirit audiences love while giving the story a warmer, more inclusive and distinctly Catalan identity.

A Ballet for the Whole Family

Ballet de Barcelona’s The Nutcracker combines the scale and tradition of classical ballet with an accessible and contemporary approach to storytelling.

The production brings together professional dancers, emerging artists and community participants, creating opportunities for different generations to share the stage.

Since its Barcelona premiere in December 2019, The Nutcracker has been performed more than 75 times in theatres across Catalonia and Spain, becoming one of Ballet de Barcelona’s most established and widely toured productions.

Filled with memorable music, theatrical surprises and festive spectacle, it offers both an introduction to ballet for new audiences and a fresh encounter with a much-loved classic.
