Community, Development Fundraising
Catalonia, Spain
Carolina Masjuan is a co-founder and one of the founding pillars of Ballet de Barcelona. Together with Chase Johnsey and Carlos Renedo, she helped establish the company in 2019, contributing from its earliest stages to the development of its administrative, community, and institutional foundations. Her work has been instrumental in building the relationships with theatres, audiences, cultural partners, and institutions that have supported the company’s growth from its first performances to its development as an established cultural organisation.
Carolina served as Associate Director of Ballet de Barcelona for six years, working closely with the company’s leadership and contributing to its development both on and beyond the stage. Among the company’s early milestones, she played a key role in establishing the relationships that enabled Ballet de Barcelona to present its first performances and begin building its network of theatres and cultural partners.
Her professional background combines cultural management, business development, event organisation, communication, and an extensive knowledge of the world of dance. A graduate in Tourism from CETT Barcelona, Carolina worked in Account Development and Event Organisation for multinational companies from the late 1980s, while developing a parallel career as a writer and dance journalist. She has contributed to publications in Catalan, Spanish, English, and French, including Balletymas, Danza en Escena, and Danser, and has interviewed and written about leading international dancers and companies.

Her understanding of dance and her ability to connect the artistic world with audiences, institutions, and cultural partners have been central to her contribution to Ballet de Barcelona. This combination of artistic knowledge, communication, and professional development has helped shape the company’s presence within the cultural landscape and strengthen its relationships with the wider community.
Although she has concluded her tenure as Associate Director, Carolina remains closely connected to Ballet de Barcelona through community outreach, relationship development, and fundraising initiatives. Her continued involvement reflects the lasting role she has played in the company’s history and in the development of the network surrounding it.
Carolina Masjuan’s contribution to Ballet de Barcelona extends beyond any single position. As a co-founder and longstanding collaborator, she has been part of the process of transforming an initial shared vision into a professional company with an international presence, a strong connection to its community, and an evolving artistic identity.
